by the time i get to phoenix is a song with about (wait imma look it up….) 5 decades of history. it’s life started as a reflection on a failed relationship by its songwriter jimmy webb, a song about leaving his love in tha middle of tha night and quietly remarking himself that by tha time he gets to phoenix she’ll realize he’s gone...webb said tha titular journey was less a geographic one, a desperate search for “a kind of fantasy about something I wish I would have done...it sort of takes place in a twilight zone of reality”, a song about grief and regret. webb’s song was covered a few years later by progressive soul music legend isaac hayes, an 18-minute long odyssey (seriously lissen to it, it’s incredible) abt love and love lost, abt how kindness can sometimes be taken for weakness. webb laid out tha journey from phoenix to albuquerque to oklahoma, hayes recounted tha tortuous relationship that birthed tha trip, and finally that journey to phoenix (and all tha pain and tears that brought u there, tha arid sun, tha heat of tha desert, tha rust growing on ur car) has been actualized...this is by tha time i get to phoenix, tha sophomore record of arizona hip hop trio injury reserve… (rewrite this, to music critic-y)
